The ESL Certificate program prepares language minorities with overlooked qualifications to enter the workforce at a professional level as translators/bilinguals/multilinguals with expertise in many fields such as health/law/manufacturing/social work/education/banking. Students with bachelor’s degrees or higher from their home country will attain skills that can qualify them for jobs in a variety of fields.

ESL Certificate Learning Outcomes

  • Make college level appropriate choices in tone and purpose of writing in a variety of essays, letters and other written, oral, and multimodal forms of expression.
  • Utilize critical reading strategies and critical thinking skills to analyze academic texts and speaking situations across the curriculum.
  • Organize essays and speaking presentations with an introduction, body and conclusion, present ideas in logical order in clearly defined paragraphs, develop their ideas and support them with clear examples and sufficient details.
  • Critically read, understand, and write about unabridged works of fiction and/or non-fiction.
  • Improve content and written and oral presentation of ideas through revision and editing their written work for coherence,m clarity, and mechanics through several drafts that integrate feedback.
  • Write a basic research essay using online sources, print media, library databases, and other resources and integrating other people’s ideas through paraphrasing, quoting, and citing MLA citation standards.
